Registration Thursday, Friday this week
Students now have an opportunity to learn from the best! The inaugural McAllen High Mariachi Summer Camp will be July 25-28 with registration set for Thursday and Friday, July 21-22.
Led by members of the three-time state champion McAllen High Mariachis, the camp is open to all students, ages 10-18. There are different skill and age levels available. Additional instruction will be provided by consultants and the Mariachi Instructor Alex Trevino.
There will be four days of hands on, engaging music-making where students will learn a new instrument, hone their skills on an existing instrument, sing, make new friends and create beautiful music. Several styles and song forms of the mariachi genre will be introduced and the camp will culminate with a recital July 28 which will be open to the public.
Camp tuition is $50 and will include a camp T-shirt, music binder, McAllen High Mariachi Oro wristband and instruction. The participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments. A limited amount of guitars, vihuelas and guitarrones will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Violin and trumpet players must provide their own instruments.
Students that are vocalists or would like to participate with vocals and already play an instrument, or would like to learn one, will have the option of being part of both the vocal and instrumental sessions of the camp.
The levels include Beginner Guitar (no experience); Intermediate/Advanced Guitar and Vihuela (Must have experience on guitar and able to play); Beginner Guitarrón: (Must have experience on Cello or Double Bass); Violin (Must have violin experience); Trumpet (Must have trumpet experience); Voice.
The camp will be in the McAllen High Music Building & Mariachi Portable (south of main campus at 2021 La Vista Ave.). Registration will be in the same location on Thursday, July 21, from 10 a.m.-noon and 4-6 p.m. On Friday, July 22, registration will be 4-6 p.m. only.
