The Book Nook is a free, fun and convenient way for children to share books at several city parks. Commissioner Veronica Whitacre unveiled the Book Nook at her health and safety family fair on Saturday October 15, 2016. She wants to make it easy for kids, teens and adults to have access to a reading opportunity. The Book Nooks are located at Fireman’s Park, Bill Schupp Park and Los Encinos Park. Parents, teens and young children can borrow a book and then return it for others to use. Commissioner Whitacre worked with McAllen Parks and Recreation and the McAllen Public Library to launch this initiative. All materials used to build the Book Nook were recycled materials from the McAllen Civic Center. Commissioner Whitacre is hoping the community supports this innovative program by sharing their books. If you’re interested in donating books please leave them at a Book Nook or call the City of McAllen at(956)681-1001.
