UTRGV students will host the second annual Zombie Walk Food drive, Wednesday, Oct. 26, on the Edinburg Campus.
Mary Ann Escamilla, a UTRGV lecturer in English, said she and her class were inspired by the television show “Z Nation” to plan the blood and food drive.
The Zombie-themed event is designed to raise awareness about the UTRGV Student Food Pantry and enable participants to help the community with donations of canned food or blood.
The class is using the hashtag #needtofeed to promote the events on social media. Escamilla and her students came up with the #needtofeed hashtag in 2015, and kept it this year for the event.
“It has a dual meaning,” Escamilla said. “One, as zombies, they know nothing but eating brains. It’s also the cause we have taken, the need to feed those who have a food insecurity.”
The Student Food Pantry is currently taking donations. You can drop off canned goods in a bin outside of Room 329, Liberal Arts Building South (ELABS).
ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR OCT. 26
· 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.: Blood drive hosted by International Honor Society Sigma Tau Delta, at the UTRGV Edinburg North Quad.
· 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Hunger Insecurity poster presentation, at the Student Union Cafe.
· 5 p.m.: Zombie make-up application, ELABS Room 186.
· 6-7 p.m.” Zombie Walk starts in front of ELABS and goes along the Bronc Trail.
Students who donate blood or two cans of food will have their zombie make-up done by UTRGV theater production students.
