EDINBURG – The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Police Department will host the 2017 Texas School-Based Law Enforcement Summit during the week of July 10-14, 2017 at Vela High School, located at 801 E. Canton Road in Edinburg.

The 5-day summit attracts more than 600 attendees each summer and is organized by the Texas School Safety Center from Texas State University.  It is one of the premier events in Texas, which caters to K-12 public schools and higher education personnel. Attendees gain the knowledge and skills that help improve the safety and the security of the schools that they serve.

The summit is tailored to the most relevant safety and security issues impacting schools today that feature evidence-based practices, resources and information on current trends that focus on the non-traditional roles school-based law enforcement have, such as mentor, counselor, peacekeeper and role model to name a few.

The week-long event will provide officers with the tools they need to respond efficiently and effectively should school emergencies occur. Officers can earn up to 36 hours of TCOLE credit and will be eligible to receive the certification for House Bill 2684 that passed June 20, 2015.

To register for the summit or for more information, contact ECISD Police Sr. Cpl. Valerie Martinez at (956) 638-5780.
