EDINBURG – Edinburg CISD Superintendent Dr. René Gutiérrez recently encouraged approximately 5,000 teachers and staff to “Connect With ECISD” during the District’s General Assembly at the McAllen Convention Center.

Everywhere you looked, educators displayed “#ConnectwithECISD” signs, which highlighted the District’s theme for the 2017-2018 school year.

Gutiérrez said his message to everyone this year is about connecting. Connecting with students, connecting with families, and connecting with each other for the benefit of the school district.

“My message is for all of us is to stick together and work together for the betterment of our community in Edinburg,” he said. “This is exciting. This is an exciting kickoff. There’s a lot of excitement by all of our staff. We are really looking forward to having another great school year.”

The excitement of the new school year could be felt by the many teachers, principals and staff, who attended the event.

“I’m very excited about my first year at Freddy Gonzalez Elementary, helping out with the kindergarten kids,” said Victoria Cantu, a teacher. “I’m so excited to be a part of the Edinburg School District.”

“I’m really excited about this school year,” said Roseanne Montemayor, a counselor at Canterbury Elementary School. “I’m excited, because we have a lot of new things coming on board and we are also going to be connecting with ECISD. We’re really excited about showcasing our school and our Canterbury Knights this year.”

This year’s keynote speaker was Debbie Silver, a Texas native and a former Louisiana Teacher of the Year.

Silver, who has 30 years’ experience as a teacher, staff development instructor and university professor, said that all educators must realize the important role they play in the lives of children.

ECISD School Board President Oscar Salinas recited the words of Tina Turner’s song “Simply the Best” to describe how proud he was of the District’s accomplishments achieved this past school year.

“My biggest message is ‘Simply the Best.’ That is the song that came to my head when I thought about what I wanted to say today. The outstanding things that this District has done,” Salinas said.
