Film lovers will congregate in Edinburg this weekend to take part in the City’s 3rd Annual South Texas International Film Festival. The Festival kicks-off tonight with a special presentation of the documentary As I Walk through the Valley and the Rio Grande Valley premiere of the film The Whole, at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Performing Arts Complex at 6 p.m.

The three-day event also features free movie screenings, editing, lighting, and special effects makeup workshops, a Film Industry Expo, and an Awards Ceremony at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance.

On Fri. Sept. 8, and Sat. Sept. 9, movie enthusiasts can enjoy free screenings of films from Portugal, Germany, Mexico, and the U.S. They can also help with Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts by donating non-perishable items from the list below.

Items needed include:

Bottled water (Non-flavored, non-carbonated)

Peanut Butter


Easy Open Tuna/Potted Meat/Vienna Sausages

Easy Open Fruit Cans/Cups

Powdered Milk


Bleach (1 Gallon)

Paper Towels

Toilet Paper


All donations must be in plastic or aluminum containers, no glass containers will be accepted. For every two items, donors will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win four tickets to the Festival’s Award Ceremony. Winners will be announced at 2 p.m. on Sat.

Winners will enjoy a red carpet affair, dinner and be part of the award ceremony as the winners of this years' STXFF are announced on Sat. evening. The grand prize winner will get a dinner for four at Santa Fe Steakhouse.
