McALLEN – Hundreds of people patiently waited in a line outside of H&M for the opportunity to be the first customers to shop the fashion store.
Some sat down and had breakfast in line while others stood and watched as La Plaza mall officials announced more food options for their new expansion wing.
The process for this expansion began in the spring of 2016 and just recently Texas de Brazil opened their doors and soon restaurants like Carlo's Bakery and Buddy V's Ristorante by celebrity chef Buddy Valastro.
Throughout the entire renovation project there has been improvements to upgrade the shopping experience at La Plaza Mall.
All the mall entrances were reimagined. New lighting and tile floors have been installed. The restrooms have been upgraded. To make the visit to the mall more comfortable soft seating areas have been added. The mall also added about 2,000 parking spaces.
In addition to all the renovations General Manager for La Plaza Mall Roberto Luciano also announced a partnership with Disney to open the first ever Disney Junior Play Area.
“All these improvements were designed with families, retailers and shoppers in mind,” Luciano said. “We look forward to sharing all these experiences with all the shoppers today and through 2018.”
In 1976 when La Plaza Mall first opened it made a significant impact for the city. The retail mall has been a staple ever since by supporting the community, creating thousands of jobs and attract visitors from all over the world.
“This has been a long time coming,” McAllen City Manager Roy Rodriguez said. “It has taken so much work with all of the partners that we have at Simon Properties.”
Rodriguez said his notes for the event included telling people to imagine the crowds the new mall was going to bring to the city. But his imagination was a reality with the H&M line.
Rodriguez could not believe his eyes. He said it was sign of what to expect.
