HIDALGO – McAllen Mayor Jim Darling was behind the wheel of a 1994 Pierce Lance fire truck, riding shotgun was fire chief Rafael Balderas.

The duo were in route to deliver the fire truck which seats six firefighters and carry 500 gallons of water as part of the interlocal government agreement that authorizes the exchange of a surplus fire truck from the City of McAllen to the State of Tamaulipas Civil Protection Regional Center in Reynosa.

“Good will is important between our two countries and we think (donating) the truck accomplishes a lot,” Darling said.

The truck is capable of pumping 1,500 gallons of water a minute at full capacity. The vehicle has 111,711 miles and is valued at $15,000. Also donated were 40 personal sets of personal protective equipment, called bunker gear as part of the agreement.

This was the second fire truck donated under Darling's tenure as mayor.
