McALLEN – Come Saturday, the area around McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium will be transformed to suit the McAllen Holiday Parade, the state's largest illuminated parade.
The one and half mile long parade route begins at 6 p.m. inside the stadium, where reserved seating is available, will head south down Bicentennial Boulevard to U.S. Business 83. Free seating will be available along the route on a first come, first serve basis.
Aside from Santa, who else is coming to town?
Every year since its inception, the city has brought multiple stars to fill the dozens of floats that will make their way down the route. This year is no different.
Guests include current and former Dallas Cowboys Jaylon Smith, Rod Smith, Tony Hill and Jay Novacek. The voice of Miguel in the film Coco, Anthony Gonzalez along with other actors including Arap Bethke, Carmen Aub and Ivan Arana will also be on floats.
The United States Air Force Honor Guard will kick off the parade and Bob & Janet Vackar, owners of Bert Ogden will be the grand marshals for 2018.
Musical acts will be Jaime y Los Chamacos, Jimmy Gonzalez Band, Grupo Estruendo and La Sonora Dinamita de Anaidita.
Christmas in the Park
Friday Nov. 30 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday from Dec. 1 from noon to 11 p.m. Christmas in the Park will have 30 food vendors and a marketplace with over 40 craft vendors. There will also be two stages for music and photos with Santa will be available Friday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Thursday Nov. 29 a $10 wristband is available for purchase at Lark, Palm View, Las Palmas Community Centers, McAllen Parks & Recreation main office for “All you can ride” at the carnival.
In partnership with South Texas College, the City of McAllen will be offering a free shuttle from the Pecan Campus beginning Saturday Dec. at 12 p.m. Buses will make a continuous loop every 10 minutes from pick-up point at STC to the parade drop-off point by the stadium. There will also be 15 designated parking lots scattered from Nolana Ave. south to Pecan Boulevard, attendees are encouraged to park and get in place early to avoid road closures and traffic congestion. The city is approximating 250,000 spectators will line the street to view the parade.
Street closures to accommodate the security and safety of the patrons will set in multiple phases.
Phase 1 will be Nov. 30 at 12 p.m. - Quince Ave., from 23rd St. to Bicentennial Blvd.; Tamarack Ave., from 23rd St. to Bicentennial Blvd.; Intersection of 21st St. and Quince Ave. and Vine Ave from 23rd St. to Bicentennial Blvd.
Phase 2 will be Dec. 1 at 7 a.m. - La Vista Ave from Bicentennial Blvd. To 16th St.; Tamarack Ave. from 23rd St. to 17th St.; Bicentennial Blvd from La Vista Ave. to Pecan Ave.; Intersection of Bicentennial Blvd. And Pecan Blvd.
Phase 3 Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. - Bicentennial Blvd form Pecan Ave. to Hackberry Ave.; Maple Ave, from Bicentennial Ave. to 17th St.; Laurel Ave from Bicentennial Ave. to 17th Blvd.; Kendlewood Ave. from Bicentennial Ave. to 17th St.; Jasmine Ave From Bicentennial Blvd. To 17th St. and Ivy Ave from Bicentennial to 17th st.

Phase 6 Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. - 23rd St and Pecan Blvd closed to northbound traffic to Nolana Ave.; 24th and Quince Ave., Sycamore, La Vista closed to eastbound traffic and Bicentennial Blvd closed to all traffic from Nolana to Houston Ave.; 21st St. and La Vista Ave closed to southbound traffic.
