The 2019 Sharyland High School FFA Agriculture Mechanics Team consisting of Jared Rhyne, Rafael Perales and Lawrence Wood placed 1st place in the Large BBQ Pit Trailer type Division at the 80th Annual Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show.
The team also received Champion of the Farm & Ranch Division and Overall Grande Champion of all the 2019 RGVLS 4-H & FFA Shop Divisions. These students began this sponsored project in December 2018 while enrolled in the Sharyland High School’s Agriculture Mechanics and Power and Machinery classes. Each student put in roughly 400 plus hours towards this project, working before, during and after school including weekends.
The team also received training on basic electrical skills from the Sharyland High School Skills USA Electrical program. Other skills they learned at Sharyland High School include custom aluminum fabrication, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), American Welding Society Code, cutting/fitting metal, plasma arc cutting, CNC part fabrication technology, Computer Aid Design (CAD), OSHA Safety practices, Department of Transportation (DOT) Code, trailer fabrication, roofing, propane burner fabrication, stainless steel fabrication and more. CTE Teachers involved in this project were Brad Wood – SHS CTE Agriculture Science Teacher; Pedro Abrigo – SHS CTE Agriculture Science Teacher and Raul Garza – SHS CTE Skill USA Electrical Trades Teacher.
