The City of Edinburg’s EMA Community Theater will be showcasing their first theatrical presentation entitled Yerma. Yerma a play by the Spanish dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca that will be brought to life May 16– 18 at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium (EMA) located at 415 W. University Dr. right behind the Edinburg City Hall.

Yerma, which means barren, is described by García Lorca as "a tragic poem”. The play tells the story of a childless woman living in rural Spain. Her desperate desire for motherhood becomes an obsession that eventually drives her to commit a horrific crime. Because of the time she is living in, she is expected to bear children. When she cannot, she is forced into measures that those in her society would view as extreme. The feature play adds another element to the rich cultural arts programming provided by the City’s Library & Cultural Arts Department. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the performance starts at 7:30 p.m. on all days, the play includes an intermission.

The EMA Community Theater is a recent addition to Edinburg’s Cultural Program established in 2019. Members of the community are encouraged to participate and attend the free presentations, donations are welcomed to continue the work of the EMA Community Theater.

Yerma is open to the public; however, individuals interested in attending are encouraged to reserve their seat online via Eventbrite at emayerma.eventbrite.com. For more information about this or other cultural programming, please contact the Sekula Memorial Library at 956-383-6246 or email the Cultural Arts Manager, Magdiel Castle atmagdiel@edinburglibrary.us.
