Taquerias in the Valley are what shoes are for women. A girl can never have too many; they come in all shapes and sizes, they are staple in every wardrobe, and if you’re having a bad day, a good pair of shoes will pick you right up. Our counterparts on the other hand may think, “They are just shoes. I have a pair of black, brown and my sneakers.”
So what’s our point? Hold your horses because we’re getting to it. Like shoes, there are many taquerias out there, but there are only a few that will make a girl feel special.”What is so special about Taqueria No Me Olvides,” you may ask yourself.Yes, they are tacos like the ones you know, tortillas stuffed with your choice of meat. While that may seem like the world’s easiest task, the art form of making the "right taco" is not one that many know and Chef Checo, Sergio Esquivel, from No Me Olvides is a bonafide Michelin Star winner who is cooking up a storm in his quaint eatery.
You may think someone like this would pull out all the stops at their restaurant and show off. But like Chef Checo, No Me Olvides is humble and brings a smile to your face. Step into a Mexican pueblito as you open the door to this taqueria. The walls are covered with a mural of Mexican artists like Frida Kahlo, Pedro Infante and Maria Felix. A Catrina, luchador mask along with giant Trajinera from Xochimilco round up the mural. Other walls of vibrant colors, like Mexican Hot Pink, unfinished picnic tables, hanging papel picado and the obligatory Kahlo quote “Pies para qué los quiero si tengo alas para volar” painted over a pair of wings (Instagram-worthy spot) finish the room.
Each taco order is made on the spot. Every tortilla is handmade and curated to fit perfectly between your fingers as you scoop it up, tilt your head and take a bite out of your salsa-drenched taco. Choose from 1 of 5 salsas, from mild to “I should have known better”. There is a salsa for just about everyone. If you don’t like the sauce, grab some of their pickled red onions for a small, but significant, spice kick. An extra special addition to these tacos are the strips of grilled nopal (aka cactus) as a side dish. If we’re talking about authenticity, nothing says Mexico like one of these. If you’ve never tried one, make sure to squeeze a little bit of lime and throw a pinch of salt for seasoning.
Eat up your complimentary charro beans as you wait for your food. We had the Papa con Carne (choice of meat, butter, crema, queso), Frida tacos (grilled chicken salad-wrapped tacos, you can switch out for tortillas), and the delicious Choriespadas (tacos with bistek, chorizo and queso). All of very nutritious and delicious, plus easy on the wallet.
Get your Taco Fix on Combo Day at Taqueria No Me Olvides celebrated every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. But make sure to go hungry as this includes 4 tacos, a papa asada and a drink just for $4.99. SIDE NOTE: This would be a great time to start that taco diet you have been putting aside. Lol.
