One-time or automatic payments are available

McAllen Public Utility (MPU) is making it easier for customers to make their payments for their monthly utility bill, thanks to a new mobile app that is now available for both Android or iPhone users. The app called McAllen Public Utility mobile was developed for free by Paymentus, who currently manages the utility’s online payment system.

“This is a great addition to help our customers manage their utility bill,” said Mark Vega, P.E., General Manager of MPU. “Sometimes, people just forget when their bill is due, or find it hard to come all the way down to City Hall to make their payment. Everyone always has their phone with them, so this is just a convenient option for them to be able to make their payment.”

Customers who wish to use the app will need a copy of their bill with them to set-up their account as they will need to enter both their customer and account number. After the initial set-up, they can log in and make their payments. They can then make a one-time full or partial payment each month, or set-up an automatic payment system, just as they can with the online system. Customers can pay by credit or debit card, or even a checking account, for both the app and online system. As soon as they payment is submitted, a receipt is emailed to the customer. Additionally, customers can continue to receive a paper bill or go paperless, as they chose.

The idea of a mobile payment app for MPU was first explored just over a year ago, when administration staff researched the option and cost. However, Paymentus responded by saying that all the elements and information needed for such an application were already a part of the system they currently manage and therefore, the software vendor was very cooperative in helping with the development of the app. In fact, the company worked with the City of McAllen’s own Information Technology Department to develop the app.

It is strictly a payment app, so customers cannot submit complaints or inquiries through the application. For line breaks or other customer service questions, customers can call (956) 681-1700.

Other payment options still include online at; in-person at McAllen City Hall, located at 1300 W. Houston Avenue; or at all McAllen H-E-B customer service stations.
