If you’ve had all the hot weather you can stand, Christmas in August could be a pleasant diversion that will remind you of the cooler weather ahead.

This annual event hosted by Extension Education Association of Hidalgo County is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, at Saint Joseph the Worker in McAllen, located on the corner of 23rd and Ithaca. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A popular feature of the event are the craft demonstrations where club members share craft and decorating ideas. There will also be a rummage sale and bake shop. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

Registration fee is $2. Proceeds will be used for community service projects and youth scholarships. In the past year, club members have donated money to the Comfort House hospice and hosted a Christmas party for the veterans nursing home.

Extension Education Association is a volunteer organization, which supports life-long learning opportunities for families through cooperative efforts with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. In Hidalgo County, there are seven community clubs and a study club with 100 members. The county association is part of the state affiliation, Texas Extension Education Association.

Clubs meet once or twice a month for educational and social activities. Educational topics have included how to prepare for the flu pandemic and managing clutter. The association also hosts a culture arts competition to promote the fine arts and handwork.

People interested in learning more about club membership and activities may attend Christmas in August and ask any club member for more details.
