The University of Texas-Pan American Field House was packed to capacity on Saturday morning as family and friends gathered to celebrate the seniors of Edinburg High School accepting their high diploma at their graduation ceremony.
The senior class of 2009 is the first graduating class to complete all four years at the new Edinburg High campus.
This year all Edinburg high school graduations were broadcast live on the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District’s web site.
Superintendent Gilberto Garza, Jr. spoke to the graduating class and challenged them to go out into the world and make their mark. He advised them not to be afraid to forge new trails, to stay focused and think positive.
“Today is the tomorrow you dreamed of yesterday,” he said. “Today you are living the dreams of your parents as you graduate from high school. Today is the commencement, the beginning of your new dreams, dreams of the future.”
Daniel Roma, principal of EHS bid farewell to the graduating class and said he didn’t know what he would be saying to the graduating class but said, “Ask yourself, ‘Am I doing my best?’ Wherever you go and whatever you do, be honest with yourself. If you are not, get off the couch and take action and do something about it,” he said.
