The Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library cordially invites the community to attend the 2nd Annual Memorial Day Observance and Wreath Presentation to be held Friday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at the Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg. This year ‘s ceremony will feature The Honorable Juan Manuel Escobar, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Presidential Honor Guard, retired U.S. Border Patrol Chief in Charge and former Texas State Representative, 2003-2007. Escobar is also a distinguished Purple Heart recipient. Also, attending will be Dolia Gonzalez, the mother of Edinburg’s hometown hero, Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez.

Director Leticia Leija states,” It is truly an honor to have Mr. Escobar be our guest speaker. Not only is he a Marine as was “Dusty” — but according to his genealogical research, he is also related to Dusty on his mother’s side. It is also a true privilege to have Ms. Gonzalez present on such a significant day.”

Other activities include the reading of the names of those Edinburg soldiers that gave their lives during war time. The National Anthem and “American Soldier” will be sung by Stephen Lopez. Mayor Richard Garcia along with our distinguished guests will then place a memorial wreath before the Library’s “Forever In Our Hearts” Wall of Honor in memory of those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Following the ceremony there will be a small reception in the Library meeting room, where Former State Representative Escobar will publicly debut his “El Corrido de Freddy Gonzalez,” a tribute to Edinburg’s own, Alfredo C. Gonzalez.
