The cities of Edinburg, Pharr, McAllen and Hidalgo have annual Christmas celebrations coming up this weekend.

In Edinburg, the annual Night of Lights festival will take place at the University of Texas-Pan American quad on Dec. 5 from 4 to 9 p.m. A parade will start at 6:30 p.m. from the Hidalgo County Courthouse to the Edinburg Professional Baseball Stadium. Trophies will be awarded to the top three participants. The evening will cap off with a firework show at 9 p.m.

The City of Pharr will have it’s Christmas Fiesta on Dec. 5 in downtown Pharr. The Official Lighting of Tree will take place in front of city hall at 7 p.m. Christmas carols and one-act plays will be performed. Booths at the event will open at 4 p.m.

The City of McAllen will have its 27th annual Candlelight Posada “Main Street Christmas 2009” at Archer Park in downtown McAllen on Dec 4 from 5 to 10 p.m. and on Dec 5 from 3 to 9 p.m. There will be a lighted parade on Friday at 7 p.m. and a Nativity Procession on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Festival of Lights in Hidalgo opened Monday Nov. 30 and will run through Dec. 19 except on Dec. 16.

“We have over 2.5 million lights that we put up on 215 major displays around the city,” said Kay Wolf, organizer of the event. “Usually it’s the largest lighting display in South Texas.”

There is also a package to see the displays via a trolley tour. The package includes dinner, the tour and seating for a small performance for $8. Visitors are also able to take just a trolly tour for $3.
