Congratulations to former residents Annie & Cramer Miller upon the birth of their son, Samuel Kern Miller, on March 11, 2010, in Houston. Little Kern arrived five days early, and all is well. Especially well with the grandparents, Mara Lessa & Alter Holand and Austin Miller of McAllen. Since this is the first grandbaby for all the grandparents, he can do no wrong!
Wedding best wishes go out to Liz Steiner & Brian Van Burkleo, who tied the knot last Saturday, March 20th . . .
And congratulations are due Mariela Garcia, named the Boys & Girls Club of McAllen’s 2009 Youth of the Year. Mariela is a senior at McHi, has been involved with the club since she was 8, and is currently employed there . . .
A big Valley welcome goes out to Dr. Robert S. Nelsen, the new president of UTPA, my alma mater!
Saw MOB (mother of the bride) Candie Wicker, whose daughter and son-in-law-to-be, Tara Wicker and Karl Drefke, will be marrying in June. The twosome are being welcomed to the state of marital bliss by the likes of Debbie & Sarah Alvarez, Sally Biel, Ruthie Person, and Josie Picou. FOB Chris Wicker need only lend his support . . .
Saw Darda & Ruben Cardenas, who were dining out. Ruben loves to greet other diners as much as anyone I know, and he’s not running for office! So, I appreciate the greetings . . .
While with Mary Lou Treviño, met her daughter and grandson, Laura and A. J. Flores, who were visiting from Boerne during spring break . . .
Also saw Bertha Hinojosa, and I didn’t realize that she had been a counselor for many years at Med High in Mercedes, and is now a counselor at STC. Thanks for the good work, Bertha!
Had a quick phone chat with Kathy Mills, another mom who had spring breakers visiting. I remember being surprised when our sons on spring break blew in the door and visited with us for 10 minutes or so, then were off to see friends. Duh, on my part . . .
Think action movies — locals Joyce Smith and Ann Williams have recently returned from a tour of Egypt, where they were some of the very few tourists allowed inside a pyramid!
Next Saturday, March 27th, the Museum of South Texas History will hold their Heritage Ranch Gala at Virgil & Carolyn Swanberg’s Pair-O-Dice Ranch in Cameron County. Gala Chair Patsy de los Santos, co-chair Josie Cappadona, and their committee have been working very hard to ensure another incredible gala honoring the museum’s Heritage Associates. Call the museum at 383-6911 to see if any reservations are left, or visit www.mosthistory.org . . .
Plan to attend World Water Day next Sunday the 28th at IMAS, the International Museum of Art & Science at 1900 Nolana, McAllen, from 1 — 5 p.m. Free general admission for the afternoon, plus fun ocean bingo games, story times, Science on a Sphere demonstrations and more. The museum is welcoming many other Valley organizations which are taking part in this event, such as the Museums of Port Isabel, Adopt-a-Beach, Sea Turtle Rescue, the Edinburg World Birding Center, and Los Caminos del Rio . . .
Begorra and I can’t believe I, in a green mistake moment, omitted last week’s St. Paddy’s Day birthdays. So happy belated green birthday to Stephanie Godinez, Noel & William Faubion, Flo Henderson, Brynn Hornbuckle, and my own sis-in-law Keesha Zey, back from a visit with kids and grandkids to celebrate. Sorry!
For this week, happy birthday for yesterday to Michael Uribe, Barbara O’Riley, Johanna Rabinowitz, and Maria Imelda Garza . . .
Happy birthday for today to Karen Henderson, Charles Thompson, Norma Ornelas, and Marcy Arioja. For tomorrow, birthday cheer goes out to Glenda Ramee and Shawn Schroeder . . .
