It began as a celebration to recognize Edinburg as having taken county records from the City of Hidalgo. Local citizens of Edinburg found themselves riding in covered wagons with one goal in mind, to obtain the city county records. That was over 40 years ago, now Edinburg Fiesta is celebrated with food, a carnival, music and entertainment.
“This is a celebration, a re-enactment recognizing Edinburg as having a county seat,” said Letty Gonzalez, president of Edinburg Chamber of Commerce.
This year’s Fiesta Edinburg theme is “SAFARI” and is scheduled from Feb. 26 to March 1 at the Edinburg Municipal Park. It will feature two live musical acts, a carnival, a parade and a Kids Safari Fun Zone for children. Admission is free, parking will be $5. The festivities will begin with the Heart of America Carnival which will run throughout the week; with a $5 all you can ride special on Feb 26.
This year’s musical headliners are Chicano rapper Little Rob, who will perform on Friday at 10 p.m. for Hip Hop Night and DUELO, performing on Saturday at 7 p.m. Both will perform at the Fiesta Edinburg’s music stage.
The “SAFARI” Kidz Zone will begin on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. The IBC Bank Fiesta Edinburg “SAFARI” Parade is scheduled for Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. The parade will start at the county courthouse and proceed on South Closner and end at Cats Stadium. Over 100 floats will participate in the parade. All of Edinburg Junior high and high school marching bands will be on the parade as well as local clubs, organizations and businesses.
