The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce held a ground breaking ceremony to welcome a new addition to the historic depot on Feb. 16.
The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce is in the process of building a back patio that will be utilized for chamber events and fundraisers; the patioís completion will be two months post groundbreaking. Fundraising efforts have been a large part of the process; the Depot Restoration Committee chaired by Elva Jackson Garza, and co-chaired by Maggie Kent has brought awareness to the history of the depot, and in turn brought community awareness and support to fundraising projects that will restore and upkeep the historical gratitude of The Depot, in which the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce and the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation currently operate from.
Depot fundraising efforts kicked off through a partnership with ECISD, launching a silver campaign that rose over $3,000 for roof repairs.
Current fundraising efforts are being lead by Maggie Kent who has received support/contributions from multiple individuals and businesses to complete the depotís outdoor patio beautification project. Supporters will be recognized with a plaque at the patioís completion.
ďAlthough itís hard work raising funds for any project, the community really embraced our efforts towards restoring and up keeping the Chamberís current home: The Depot. It has been a fun project, and Iíve enjoyed working with the Depot Restoration Committee, Letty Gonzalez, Chamber President, our financial supporters and of course Noel Villarreal with Landscaping Etc. who assisted in creating the plans, and who has also donated his time and effort towards this wonderful project. The patio is not done just yet, and still has a ways to go, however the crew is working hard daily when weather permits, and I for see completion of the patio within the next couple of monthsĒ noted Maggie Kent.
