The University of Texas-Pan American Office of Career Services will host its 36th Annual Career Day Thursday, Feb. 26 at the UTPA Fieldhouse, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Career Day, known for being one of the largest job expos of the academic year at UTPA, offers students and alumni the opportunity to meet with employers from different industries interested in recruiting individuals for internships, part-time and full-time employment.

Local, state and national organizations will be providing information about the variety of career opportunities available within their groups. More than 50 organizations are expected to participate including the City of McAllen, Mission Regional Medical Center, Northrop Grumman, South Texas Health System, U.S. Border Patrol, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Walgreens, Target Corporation, Halliburton, and many more.

Job interviews will be conducted in the week prior and following the career fair. All students should dress professionally and bring résumés to distribute to potential employers.

In addition, Career Services staff will be assisting students with résumé reviews, registration for the online job bank Bronc Career Connection, and providing assistance to sign up for campus recruitment activities such as job interviews.

“It is important to update or create a résumé and work on interview skills. The job market is challenging and we are seeing that the most prepared student is getting the job offers and better opportunities,” said Velinda Reyes, UTPA Career Services director.

“A degree itself will not get the job for the student. The total package is necessary, which includes the degree, experience, and the skills such as communication, strong work ethic, ability to make decisions, and demonstration of leadership and integrity. All are vital for an interviewee to compete,” Reyes added.

Entry to the expo is free. Students should bring their UTPA ID for faster entry.

A Networking Social, sponsored by Toyota, for UTPA students and alumni to meet with several company representatives will be held prior to the Career Day at the Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex, located on the corner of Sugar Road and Schunior Street, from 6 to 8 p.m.
