The Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA) and Kimberly-Clark encourage families across the country to spend quality time together during National Family Week, a week dedicated to fostering connections between today’s youth and their families. This marks the fifth year BGCA and K-C have partnered to extend the reach of the Family PLUS (Parents Leading, Uniting, Serving) program nationally by encouraging families to participate in activities that enhance their time together.

During this week, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg Rio Grande Valley will host the 19th Annual Celebration of Family, a community Thanksgiving dinner for Club members and their families on Monday, Nov. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Edinburg Activity Center located on 123 Palm Drive, Edinburg.

The menu includes turkey, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, bread, dessert and tea. Everyone is welcome to join in on this Thanksgiving Celebration. This annual celebration is a great community service event where families can come out to enjoy the holiday with their children. This event is free to all club members and their families.

“National Family Week is a natural fit with the tenets and ideas of the Family PLUS initiative — a flagship program that takes a comprehensive approach to youth development by giving families the encouragement and resources needed to raise a child in today’s world,” said Jose Cruz, BGCA’s director of Family PLUS. “By extending National Family Week activities to all of our Clubs, we remind family members to celebrate and connect with one another during the start of the holiday season.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg Family Strengthening programming offers important avenues for addressing all three of the national IMPACT 2012’s key elements: academic success, character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. This is one more way we are providing opportunities for parents to increase their involvement in the lives of their children.

“Again this year we invite parents and other caring individuals to participate in the Boys & Girls Clubs National Family Week as partners,” said Maria T. Medina, BGCE Director of Operations. “By demonstrating the impact parents can have through our concerted efforts in quality Family PLUS programs we create opportunities for families to support and help today’s youth.” Parents, community leaders, and other caring adults are invited to bring their special holiday stories, books, written family memories and share with a group of children during the event. Caring adults will have the opportunity to spend time with groups of children divided by age and conduct active, casual and fun interaction before everyone sits down for dinner. Advancing literacy is of paramount importance to us and parents alike and we are constantly striving to give Club members every opportunity to learn. This is an excellent way to enhance our students’ academic success.
