Luis Garcia Jr. passed away on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at the age of 81. He was born on Dec. 7, 1927 to Luis Sr. and Esiquia Garcia.

Mr. Garcia was a long time resident of Edinburg. He retired from The Monitor as a photographer after 39 years of service. Mr. Garcia was an active member of the McAllen Lions Club, McAllen Chamber of commerce, where he was a greeter, McAllen Kiwanis Club, an honorary member of V.F.W. Post 8788 of McAllen, and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. He is preceded in death by his parents, Luis Sr. and Esiquia Garcia.

Mr. Garcia is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Vitalia; four daughters, Yolanda Cristina (Ruben) Ortega of Harlingen, Maria Elena (Jose Andres Jr) Gutierrez of Buda, Maria del Carmen Garcia of Edinburg, Dalia Ann (Jaime) Garcia of Primera; two brothers, Guadalupe “Lupe” Garcia Sr. and Frank Garcia both of Edinburg; two sisters Angela Sanchez of Granger, Washington and Lionela Reyna of Edinburg; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a half-brother, Ruben Garcia of McAllen.

Visitations were held with rosary on Feb. 16 at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton, in Edinburg. Funeral services were held Feb. 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Jose Andres Gutierrez, III, Ruben Orega Jr., Jose Alonzo Gutierrez, Jorge Luis Garcia, Guadalupe Garcia, Jr., and Aaron Hernandez. Honorary pallbearers were Nathan Pena and Brandon Pena. Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
