“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Maria Elida Martinez of La Blanca; daughter, Eneida (Fidencio) Mercado of La Blanca; son, Leonel (Kristy) Martinez Jr. of Edinburg; grandchildren, Kayne Marcel and Izrah Lee Martinez, Isabella Grace, Noah Israel and Ava-Marie Mercado; brother Margarito (Pilar) Martinez of Alamo; sisters, Yolanda (Hector) Luna of Edinburg, and Gloria (Benjamin) Bernal of La Blanca; mother-in-law, Ramona (+Guadalupe, Sr.) Gonzalez of Edinburg and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law of Edinburg. Leonel had a day job working for Weyerhaeuser Paper Company for 32 years until his retirement in 2008 but his career was fishing. He loved attending car shows with his sons and grandsons and visiting with his brother and talking about cars and how to rebuild them. He especially enjoyed playing the slot machines and bingo at Miracle Mile in Pharr, TX with his wife Elida. When diagnosed with cancer in 2013, he never faltered. He fought long and hard! His desire was to make sure he made lasting memories with his family especially his grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his beloved son, Israel “Shorty” Martinez; parents, Margarito, Sr. and Margarita Martinez of La Blanca; and brother, Adalberto “Kiko” Martinez.
An organization he held close to his heart was the Make-A-Wish Foundation of McAllen.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Suresh Ratnam and staff from Texas Oncology of McAllen for their loving care and support these past three years and his nurse Michelle from Hospice Compassionate Care.
