MERCEDES - South Texas Independent School District (STISD) proudly announces the 2011 valedictorians and salutatorians for South Texas Academy of Medical Technology (Med Tech), South Texas Business, Education & Technology Academy (BETA), South Texas High School for Health Professions (Med High) and The Science Academy of South Texas (Sci Tech).
The STISD valedictorians are Melva Laura Maldonado of Med Tech, Celina Denisse Garcia of BETA, Daniela Garza of Med High and Sumit Gogia of Sci Tech.
Maldonado of San Benito is the daughter of Lauro and Rebecca Maldonado. She plans to attend Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, in the fall and will major in Biology, Biochemistry or a physical science.
Garcia of Edinburg is the daughter of Jorge and Blanca Garcia. She will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and will pursue a degree in a science or Psychology.
Garza of Edinburg is the daughter of Sergio and Martha Garza. She will attend Rice University in Houston, Texas, and will double major in Biochemistry & Cell Biology and Hispanic Studies.
Gogia of Harlingen is the son of Manoj Gogia, M.D., and Poonam Gogia, M.D. He will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and double major in Mathematics and Computer Science.
The STISD salutatorians include Nina Camille Alvarez Lopez of Med Tech, Cassandra Ann Gonzalez of BETA, Muhammad M. Shamim of Med High and Patrick Kim of Sci Tech.
Lopez of McAllen is the daughter of Jorge and Margarita Alvarez. She will be attending the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) in Edinburg, Texas, and will major in Biology.
Gonzalez of Edinburg is the daughter of Rosendo, Jr., and Jean Gonzalez. She will attend UTPA and pursue a degree in Marketing.
Shamim of Brownsville is the son of Muhammad and Birjees Shamim. Shamim will attend UTPA and major in Biology under the Baylor College of Medicine Pre-Medical Honors Program.
Kim of McAllen is the son of Joseph and Angela Kim. He will attend Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and double major in Engineering and Music.
STISD also announces the seniors who ranked in the top 10 percent of their graduating class.
At Med Tech, the students are: Ivy Priscilla Alvarado of Brownsville, Gabriela Adelaida Barajas of San Benito, Forrest Stone Bottomly of La Feria, Nancy Lerma of Brownsville, Airybelle Camila Rodriguez of Harlingen and Dennyse Alejandra Salinas of Brownsville.
At BETA, the seniors are: Abigail Ucat Cartagenas of Edinburg, Katrina Nicole Jones of Edinburg, Kari Ann Kimball of Harlingen, Alexxa G. Leon of Edinburg, Sarai Maldonado of Pharr, Cristina Pulido of Edinburg, Zachary Oliver Ruiz of Edinburg, Juliana L. Salinas of Mission, Sharon Thomas of Edinburg and Regina E. Trevino of Mission.
At Med High, the seniors are: Alejandro Aquino of Edinburg, Carlos Carames of McAllen, Stephanie Carrera of Brownsville, Dora L. Cavazos of Hidalgo, Francisco Eguia of Harlingen, Rocelle Pauline M.
