Don Burns, board president of Rio Grande Valley Make A Wish organization, accepted a check for $4,654.50 on Friday, April 8th from the Sharyland ISD librarians. In addition to the check previous donations totaling $320 were accepted by Ava Sandlin, executive director of RGV Make A Wish.

The librarians raised the money by selling Make A Wish STARS to students, staff, parents, and community members.  Those STARS decorated the libraries for months and served to remind students that good health is something we should never take for granted.  RGV Make A Wish grants wishes to children ages 2-17 who are struggling with life-threatening illnesses.  Lead Librarian, Nicole Cruz, invited Ava Sandlin to a district librarian meeting earlier this school year.  “I like to invite community agencies and speakers to share important information with our librarians.  Librarians are asked by staff, students, and parents for answers to all sorts of questions.  It helps to keep them informed.  By listening to Ms. Sandlin’s presentation, librarians know they can refer students to Make A Wish.”

Mr. Burns presented a plaque to the librarians for their time, energy, and generosity in leading this worthy campaign for funds.  He shared that many of our current and former Sharyland students have had their wishes granted through this organization.
