Jaime Acuna scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Edinburg Bobcats to a 51-44 win over Harlingen South at home Friday, bringing the Runnin’ Cats to 11-0 in District 31-5A and 22-6 overall.

Although he started slowly, Acuna came on and so did the Bobcats, erasing a 6-point deficit in the first period to lead by one, 27-26, on two Acuna free throws with 1 second left.

Phillip De la Rosa fired in a trio of three-pointers in the half for the ‘Cats, who put a pair of 8-0 runs on the board to beat back the Hawks, who played long stretches without star guard Joseph Bedford, who was in early foul trouble and failed to score.

The ‘Cats made do without Chris Flores, who had the flu, and now have a two-game lead over the Hawks with three to play, looking for their fourth straight league championship. Edinburg worked against North Tuesday can completes the league slate against P-SJ-A Memorial and Harlingen before preparing for the postseason.

Their likely first-round opponent is San Benito, currently running in fourth down in 32-5A, a game back of Brownsville Pace and three back of co-leaders Weslaco and Brownsville Hanna.

Though they’re out of the race, the Cougars of Edinburg North got a season-high 24 points from senior John Carcano Friday in whipping P-SJ-A Memorial, 69-42 to end a stretch that saw them lose five of six.

Econ is still winless in league play at 0-11, but Mark Alvarez continues to show improvement for the Jags; he went for 19 against P-SJ-A in a 12-point loss Friday, after having 16 points versus Harlingen in his last outing. Econ hit a season-high 9 three-pointers Friday.
