The Bobcat baseball boys finished up with a rousing win at North Friday, smashing the Coogs 13-1 with a series of sharp hits early. Derrick Soza and Aldo Zamora smacked doubles in the first and Lee Rios pelted his fourth triple of the season as the Bobcats put up four quick ones.

They begin the playoffs this week after taking second place in District 31-5A, with the three-game bi-district series against Weslaco starting Thursday on the road and moving to EHS Friday. If necessary, the deciding game will be at Weslaco Saturday night.

With a record of 19-11, EHS takes on a 15-14 Weslaco team that came in third down in District 32-5A. The Bobcats finished the regular season ranked No. 8 in the Valley, scoring 27 runs in their last two games. In league play, team pitching allowed one run or less in seven of 14 games to go 10-4, second behind P-SJ-A.

He’s been a star since he hit the field for North, and now Cesar Barajas has earned a terrific award as he was named the All-Valley soccer team over the weekend.

The sophomore midfielder was one of six city kids to make the squad, and the only first-teamer, after leading the Cougars to second in 31-5A this season.

Named to the second team was Abel Farias, the high-scoring Econ senior off the Jags’ district champ unit.

Third-teamers included Farias’ Econ teammate, goalkeeper Luis Gonzalez, and Adrian Armijo, a veteran defender who helped EHS make it back to the playoffs for the first time in five seasons. Econ was ranked seventh in the final Valley poll with North a spot behind.

On the girls’ side, Andrea “Red” Gonzalez was a second-team All-Valley pick with Alyssa Perez of EHS third. The Lady Coogs came in second in 31-5A with EHS also making the playoffs. North was No. 8 in the last ranking with the Lady Bobcats No. 10.

The annual RGVSCO East-West Showcase will be played at Edinburg’s Cats Stadium, Thursday night, and a host of the area’s best seniors will be on hand to play in their last high school game.
