It was still going to be a huge collision, but the luster of Tuesday’s EHS-North softball game was tarnished a bit last week, as both teams suffered their first District 31-5A loss of the season, to the same team.

The Lady Bobcats dropped a tense 1-0 decision to Harlingen South Friday, three days after the Lady Cougars were bested 3-2 by the Lady Hawks. The city rivals were back to square one after the surprise jolt.

Edinburg had scored 75 runs in five games heading into Friday’s showdown against the unbeaten Lady Hawks, but got zero in seven innings. Leanne “The Little General” Hinojosa had four hits but EHS had a couple of runners thrown out at the plate.

Meanwhile, North rebounded with a 6-1 win against P-SJ-A Memorial, as Nikki Garza homered and Annie Badillo poked two hits. Tuesday’s grudge match at EHS marked the end of the first half of loop action.

The Lady Jags of Econ broke through for their first league win Friday, shutting out P-SJ-A 2-0 to rise to 1-5. The baseball Jags got beat by Harlingen 13-0, and have now surrendered 78 runs in six losses. North was also blanked, 10-0 by Harlingen South, and was 1-4 heading into Tuesday’s try against P-SJ-A Memorial. The Coogs hope to get some momentum going against the Wolverines, as Thursday’s contest against EHS looms.

Aaron Olvera picked up his second MVP award of the year last week, as he was named the player of the year in District 31-5A, to go with All-City MVPO accolades. His coach, Zeke Cuellar, was named Coach of the Year. Olvera also was named to the All-Valley first team Sunday, with teammate Stevie Guerrero a third-team pick.

Off the highly successful Harvest Christian group, Tyler Klassen was a first-team All-Valley selection and teammate J.R. Gonzalez was third unit. Harvest Coach Jaime Gonzalez capped a banner year for the young program by winning Valley Coach of the Year honors.
