After a lull, the local boxing scene is set to heat up in February, as Top Rank Boxing and Fox Sports will inaugurate the Top Rank Live series starting Feb. 6 at the McAllen Convention Center.

Humberto “Tito” Ramos, who trains in Edinburg, will be on the card along with Eric “Drummer Boy” Molina of Lyford. Ramos, originally from Mission, is 10-0 as a light welterweight.

Then, Edinburg’s own Raul “El Tigre” Casarez (14-2, 7 KOs) is set to take to the ring Feb. 27, on a card with Brownsville’s Sergio Perales. Marines Promotions is putting thus one together and it should be a good one, as Weslaco’s Robert “La Amenaza” Garcia (27-2, 20 KOs) will also fight for the first time in over a year.

Both teams at The University of Texas-Pan American will be in action this weekend at the Field House. The men (3-17) and women (6-12) take on North Dakota Thursday and South Dakota Saturday as Great West Conference play continues.

In golf, the men will begin their latest season Feb. 21 at Logan, S.C. against Francis Marion University, while the women get going March 1 at Corpus Christi. EHS ex Adam Haley is a prominent member of the men’s roster.

The tennis teams are already competing, as the men played Texas A&M Saturday, TCU Sunday, and SMU Monday. The women lost to SMU and Stephen F. Austin recently with matches at SFA and Sam Houston Jan. 29-30.

Finally, the baseball Broncs start their season Feb. 26-28 with the annual Al Ogletree Classic at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
