Cats Stadium was the site for the annual RGV Soccer Coaches Organization showcase of senior all-stars, Thursday night.

The West girls rolled to a 7-3 win behind two goals from Econ senior Idalia Ortiz, who represented the Lady Jags along with scoring queen Dulce Torres. North sent Gisela Ledesma and defender Edna Gonzalez to compete in the game.

For the boys, Econ’s Abel Farias and Jesse Cadena were on the West roster along with three EHS veterans, Jaime Juarez, Marco Cantu, and Angel Ibarra.

Jessica Tamen of EHS is following in the footsteps of golfing great Felicia Espericueta of North, as a state qualifier in the sport.

The sophomore led the Valley in stroke average by five strokes this season, winning the RGV Golf Coaches Association MVP award. Now she is headed to state after a seventh-place finish last year at regionals. Espericueta was a consistent performer at the highest levels before wrapping up her career last year.

Tamen, whose sister Olivia was a senior golfer this season, will compete at Jimmy Clay Golf Course Thursday, May 20. She is the Valley’s lone representative on the girls’ side.

North’s Luis Serrano is the only city kid still alive in the track and field season, as he finished second at the regional meet in the 3,200. The long-time distance star for the Coogs will face off with the state’s best in Austin at the storied state meet.

As for the rest of the locals, the best performance in San Antonio came from a guy who has been under the radar in 2010 but peaked at the right time. EHS high jumper Eli Abrego went off at a career-best 6-foot-8 last week and tied for the lead, ending third on scratches and barely missing a trip to state.

The Edinburg Landsharks lost for the second game in a row last week, dropping a 34-20 decision to the San Antonio Warriors. The Sharks, who have two games left in the regular season, got down 12-0 but rallied with a touchdown pass to Marco Guzman and an 80-yard interception return for six by Brandon Highsmith. SA led by two at the half and closed out its second win over Edinburg in 2010.

The Sharks (4-3) finish the season against the RGV Bandits and South Texas Bulldogs in their quest for the playoffs. The game against the Bandits will be Saturday, May 13 at Barrientes Middle School, with part of the proceeds going to aid the Edinburg Boys and Girls Club. Game time is 5 p.m.
