OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) women’s basketball team (12-16 7-4 GWC) travels to Orem, Utah today to compete in the inaugural Great West Conference (GWC) Women’s Basketball Championship March 11-13 at the McKay Center on the campus of Utah Valley University.
The Lady Broncs are the No. 2 seed and will face the No. 7 Houston Baptist University (HBU) Huskies in the first round of the tournament Thursday, March 11 at 6 p.m. (CT).
UTPA swept the Huskies this season winning at home 79-66 and at HBU 77-76. The Lady Broncs lead the all-time series 6-1, and head into the tournament coming off of a split road trip, winning 57-56 at South Dakota and falling 101-61 against North Dakota last weekend. The Huskies ended the regular season with losses at both North and South Dakota.
“Going into the tournament, we’re not going to change much from the regular season. All of the teams are on the same playing field, and everyone has a chance to win. We just have to do what we do well,” head coach Denny Downing said.
If the Lady Broncs advance in the tournament, they would take on either Chicago State or Utah Valley University in the semi-finals Friday at 3:30 p.m. (CT).
