The hoops season is in full swing now, with all three city teams working out the kinks as November wears on.

EHS (3-2) was pounded by Sharyland over the weekend and went 2-1 for the week, winning over San Benito Tuesday, with Mich Mercelita (25) and Eileen Martinez (16) carrying the load on the road.

North got its second victory in as many starts, a 42-31 home decision over Mission following a 7-point win against Sharyland. Vicky Pena led the way Tuesday with 18 points while Ianelly Espinoza (13 rebounds) and Deissy Sauceda (10) controlled the middle.

Econ was bested Tuesday by Los Fresnos, despite 14 points and four 3-pointers from senior guard Kenia Gonzalez. The Lady Jags then turned around Friday and doubled up Mission 34-17, with Yvette Garza making 13 points.

In other girls' hoops highlights, former EHS All-Valley MVP Laura Torres saw action at the end of The University of Texas-Pan American's home win Monday night over Paul Quinn.

From the club sports, EHS golfer Jessica Tamen, the two-time state qualifier, signed a letter of intent last week to play for St. Edward's in Austin.
