FRISCO, Texas – The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers gave up 29 points on 10 turnovers in a 109-97 loss to the Texas Legends on Sunday at Dr Pepper Arena.

The Vipers (31-17) fall into a second place tie with the Tulsa 66ers in the Western Conference standings with the third-best record in the league. The Vipers hold the tiebreaker over the 66ers by virtue of winning the season series 2-0.

The Legends (22-25) took an early 6-3 lead, but the Vipers scored the next six points to take a 9-6 lead on Jon Scheyer’s driving layup at the 8:58 mark. After the Legends pulled within one on two free throws by Justin Dentmon, the Vipers went on another 6-0 run to take a 15-8 lead on back-to-back three-pointers by Richard Roby. The Legends scored the next nine points to take a 17-15 lead on a reverse lay-up by Dentmon at the 3:50 mark. The Legends took their largest lead of the quarter at 25-17 with 1:37 remaining on a basket by Dentmon.

Roby led the Vipers with a game-high 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 3-of-7 shooting from behind the arc. Terrel Harris scored 15 points, Jon Scheyer scored 12 points while Jerel McNeal finished with 11.

The Legends led 34-27 at the 8:33 mark of the second quarter, but the Vipers went on an 8-0 run, capped by a Roby three-pointer to take the lead back at 35-34. The Legends scored the next nine points to take a 43-35 lead on a driving lay-up by Antonio Daniels with 4:28 remaining in the quarter.

The Legends led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter while putting the game out of reach.

Joe Alexander led the Legends with 23 points and 10 rebounds, Sean Williams scored 17 points with eight rebounds and six blocks. Dentmon finished with 20 points.

The Vipers return home to host the Springfield Armor on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at State Farm Arena. It’s Hispanic Heritage Night. The Vipers will wear Los Vipers uniforms to be auctioned off for charity after the game. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive maracas, courtesy of State Farm.
